JOIN US!

Volunteers are key to IGFOA's diverse programs and services. Members volunteering for committees or other assignments are accountable to fellow volunteers and are asked to attend scheduled committee and sub-committee meetings, if applicable and complete tasks/projects for which you volunteered. You may be asked to conduct research, follow-up and confirm planning details and complete special assignments outside of meetings to accomplish the goals of the committee and to show your support by attending your committee's programs on a regular basis.

Help us break the old 80/20 rule where 80% of the work routinely gets done by ONLY 20% of the people!

NEWSLETTER CONTRIBUTOR
The Illinois GFOA publishes a member newsletter ten times each year.  IGFOA continually seeks educational and newsworthy material from members. Consider reporting on a chapter meeting or seminar topic, reviewing a new publication, sharing an analysis of the impacts a legislative or regulatory change will have on your jurisdiction, or authoring an information article on a "hot topic" issue.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
IGFOA welcomes topics and presenters for career development seminars and annual conference sessions. If you have an idea for a presentation, please let us know. Solo or panel presentations are welcome. Log-in to the Members Directory to update your profile and volunteer as an instructor

CHAPTERS
IGFOA's chapters are very active. If you are interested in helping a chapter plan a meeting or have other ideas about the chapter, please contact the respective chapter officers.

COMMITTEES
The Illinois GFOA has eight standing committees and frequently uses ad hoc committees. The number of meetings held varies by committee, as does the location of meetings. The focus of each standing committee is explained below:

Career Development
Provides technical, informational and skill-building courses widely recognized for quality, relevance to current needs and contribution to individual professional development. Working in teams, committee members are responsible for topic, curriculum and speaker for specific seminars. Committee members also serve as on-site hosts and moderators at seminars, which range in length from one-half day to three days. Each committee member receives a seminar planning guide. The committee meets at least twice each year. Seminar planning work is mainly completed outside committee meetings.

Annual Conference
Plans and hosts the IGFOA Annual Conference held in September each year. The committee consists of Social and Program sub-committees. The Social sub-committee helps plan off-site activities for the Annual Conference and is responsible for planning specific menus and activities, following through on details and hosting planned events. The Program sub-committee is responsible for selecting topics and speakers for conference sessions, coordinating speaker needs and serving as session moderators. The conference sub-committees meet two or three times each year. Work is mainly completed outside of committee meetings.

Legislative
Serves as the Association's voice in state and federal legislative issues affecting local government finance. Develops relations with state constitutional offices to communicate local government views and promote sound government financial policies. Committee meets annually to develop policy recommendations and throughout the year as needed. Committee members may be called upon to write letters, analyze legislation or testify at legislative committee hearings in Springfield as needed.

Membership
Works to encourage membership participation in Illinois GFOA activities and attract new members. The committee works with chapters and other committees to assure services meet members' needs. The committee organizes and hosts Illinois reception at the GFOA Conference and other networking events. The committee periodically hosts informational booths at other association conferences. This committee meets at least quarterly and members also carry out assignments outside meetings.

Nominating
Seeks and recommends candidates for Executive Board. Appointed by IGFOA President.

Technical Accounting Review
Monitors and comments on activities and rulings of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). Provides testimony on GASB standards and educates the membership on those standards. This committee meets as needed to review GASB proposals and members may be asked to carry out assignments outside of meetings.
