Job Description:

The Village of North Riverside is in search of a qualified candidate to serve as an Accountant in the Finance Department. This position performs detailed professional accounting work in a wide variety of the Finance Department functions, including maintaining and reviewing financial records and performing technical work relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

The Accountant reports directly to the Finance Director, while also working closely with Finance and other departmental staff.

Duties:

The following are some of the typical responsibilities the Accountant may be required to perform. Note that this position may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional duties in order to address the changing financial needs of the Village.

  1. Perform detailed accounting work in Finance areas such as investments, cash management, general ledger, year-end and month-end closing, payroll and fixed assets; prepare associated journal entries; maintain fixed asset register and schedules.
  2. Participate in the preparation of annual financial reports including, but not limited to, the Village’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR); review, reconcile, and prepare notes to the financial statements, supporting work papers, and other reports; respond to audit inquiries from external auditors and other governmental agencies.
  3. Support the annual budget and other related capital planning process through collaboration with the Village Administrator, Village President, Board of Trustees, Department Directors and other staff.
  4. Coordinate bank transactions including wire transfers, credit card transactions, ACH payments, stop payments and discrepancies; open new accounts and order supplies as needed.
  5. Research and implement new government accounting and financial reporting requirements and make recommendations for changes in policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
  6. Ensures the necessary standards to maintain the Village’s overall financial health and credit rating.
  7. Stay abreast of pertinent local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, especially as related to accounting, auditing, and grants.
  8. Plan, prioritize, and review the work of professional staff assigned to professional accounting and analysis duties, including the preparation of financial statements, review of fiscal records, and monitoring of financial transactions.
  9. Develop schedules and methods to accomplish assignments ensuring work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  10. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other Village employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  11. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or another related field from an accredited university

- CPA or CGFO is desirable

- At least three (3) years of progressive experience in municipal finance or other closely related field

- Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is required

- BS&A financial management package is a plus

Salary Range: $60,000 to $100,000, with starting salary commensurate with skills, experience and knowledge.
