GASB 72 was issued in February of 2015 and addresses accounting and financial reporting related to fair value measurements. GASB’s intent is to enhance the comparability of financial statements among governments by requiring measurement of certain assets and liabilities at fair value using a consistent and more detailed definition of fair value and accepted valuation techniques.
This standard expands fair value disclosures to provide comprehensive information for financial statement users about the impact of fair value measurements on a government’s financial position. The requirements are effective for financial statements for periods beginning after June 15, 2015, with early application encouraged.
