The City of DeKalb (pop. 44,030) seeks a highly motivated professional for the position of Assistant City Manager. The City of DeKalb is a full-service home rule municipality located 60 miles west of Chicago and proud home to Northern Illinois University. The City has a $38 million general fund budget and a total budget of $101 million across all funds with 192 full-time and 40 part-time employees.

The Assistant City Manager assists the City Manager in all aspects of City government and will be an integral member of the Executive Team. This position is responsible for the day-to-day management of the finance, human resources, and information technology activities of the City. The Assistant City Manager will also assist the City Manager with the administration of operations, long-range planning, budget development and administration, financial strategies, and organizational development. This position will collaborate regularly with City staff, elected officials, collective bargaining units, committee members and the community at large.

We require a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in public administration, accounting, finance or a related field. A master’s degree in public administration, business administration, accounting or a related field is preferred. Candidates must possess a minimum of 5 years of progressive supervisory experience in local government or a similar setting with an emphasis on financial management, budgeting, human resources, and personnel management. Experience in municipal government financial administration preferred.

The starting salary for the position is between $107,312- $131,457 commensurate with knowledge, skills and experience.
