Senior Accountant | Village of Western Springs

The Village of Western Springs - a community of 13,629 residents and located about 15 miles west of downtown Chicago - seeks a creative, detail-oriented individual to join our Department of Finance as a full-time Senior Accountant.  This position will provide high-level administrative support in preparing and maintaining all account ledgers and schedules, reconciliations to the general ledger, and managing both the accounting system and departmental internal control structures.

Financial Reporting

Responsible for preparing and analyzing all financial reports. Supports the Director of Finance in the annual budget and auditing process. Works on bank/account/journal reconciliations, preparing year-end adjusting entries and manages daily bank deposits. Assists in preparation of department agenda items and reports for Committee, Commission and Board meetings.

Payroll Process

Oversees the payroll process, reviews hours and payroll codes on submitted timesheets and transmits timesheet information to the third-party administrator.  Responsible for coordinating payroll and vendor tax document preparation and filing. Works with departments to verify payroll accuracy.

Grant Accounting

Responsible for grant accounting including, reporting and collecting information from departments needed for the administration of the grant.  Administers current grants, works closely with departments to understand the grants they are pursuing and provides guidance and assistance as needed.  Tracks grant activity and requirements. 

 A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance along with college level coursework in governmental accounting for an accredited college/university is required.  Graduate work or advanced degree in Accounting or closely related field is a plus. Coursework in governmental accounting for an accredited college/university is required. Graduate work or advanced degree in Accountant or closely related field is a plus. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred. Must have a minimum of two (2) years of comparable work experiences. Accounting/Finance experience with a government or non-profit entity is preferred.

 Experience in fund accounting and municipal budgeting procedures is a plus. Strong verbal and written communication skills, experience with computerized accounting systems and the ability to deal with difficult or stressful situations are needed. In addition, the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines, produce accurate documents, work well with others, and learn and operate various computer software is required. 

Starting Salary:  $64,000 - $70,000 DOQ

Full Salary Range: $64,000 - $96,000     

Hours:  37.5 hours/week, attendance at Board, Committee, Commission meetings as required.
