Protection of the Tax Exempt Status for Municipal Bonds

Posted January 10, 2017 in Legislative briefs

IML has been actively involved with several issues pending before Congress. One of those issues is protection of the tax exempt status for municipal bonds.

Congressman Randy Hultgren (IL-14) and Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-2) formed a Congressional Municipal Finance Caucus on March 8, 2016 to protect and preserve the municipal bond tax exemption and explore policies that would further enhance municipal finance. Membership in the Caucus continues to grow.

We have been asking our member municipalities to send letters to their Members of Congress to request that they join the Congressional Municipal Finance Caucus. We are pleased that many communities have already sent the letters.

We respectfully request that IGFOA members send a similar letter on behalf of their municipalities to their Members of Congress and ask them to join this important, bipartisan group.  A sample letter (see Download button below) for you to send is attached to this message for your convenience. Of course, feel free to modify it as you deem appropriate.

We also ask that IGFOA members copy IML on the letter. Our address is P.O. Box 5180, Springfield, IL 62705. Some of our advocacy will call attention to your letters, and on occasion we may have copies on hand when we meet with congressmen and staff. Please provide us with this tool in support of our communities. Thanks.
