The Village of Wheeling is accepting applications for the position of Accountant in the Finance Department. The Accountant performs professional accounting work related to month end reconciliation, assigned fund and pension reporting, and annual audit preparation; supports the Finance Director in the preparation of the annual operating budget and the annual liability insurance renewal; and serves as a backup to the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions.
The position reports to the Deputy Finance Director and works alongside a Senior Accountant.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform monthly reconciliation of investment transactions, including purchases, sales, and interest.
- Reconcile daily cash, credit card, and ACH transactions to the General Ledger, including front counter, lockbox, and online payments.
- Reconcile and prepare revenue receipt schedules for major revenue sources, including taxes, utilities, and other Village revenues.
- Assist with monthly balance sheet reconciliations, including preparing adjusting journal entries for discrepancies.
- Reconcile and record accounting activity for the Police and Fire Pension Funds, including related journal entries and financial reporting.
- Prepare the Annual Treasurer’s Report and reconcile monthly legal bills.
- Prepare and record monthly journal entries and maintain accurate accounting records.
- Assist with annual audit preparation, including work papers, supporting schedules, and fixed asset records.
- Assist with annual budget preparation and administration, including budget materials, meetings, public notices, and distribution of final budgets.
- Support risk management and Tax Incremental Financing (TIF) reporting, as well as preparation, attendance, and minutes for annual Joint Review Board meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field, plus a minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of professional accounting experience, which may include experience in budgeting, purchasing, or risk management; or any combination of relevant education and experience deemed sufficient by the Village Manager.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Municipal or other governmental accounting experience, and experience maintaining financial records within an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
Governmental accounting experience is preferred but is not required. Candidates from public accounting and private sector backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The hiring range for this position is $88,785 to $105,381, depending on qualifications and experience, within a full salary range of $88,785 to $125,282.
