Staff Accountant | City of Markham

Under the direction of the Treasurer, the Staff Accountant is to work closely with the Finance Director to assist with various financial operations for the City, inclusive of general ledger management, cash flow management, financial analysis, budgeting and reporting, audit preparation and accounts receivable functions.
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations
- Monthly review of trial balance, and make adjustments as necessary
- Preparation of financial reports such as quarterly budget reports
- Perform accounts receivable functions, such as recording and making deposits
- Calculate payroll adjustments, step increases, longevity raises, etc.
- Process payroll
- Assist with audit preparation inclusive of schedules
- Assist Finance Director with other reports and analysis as needed
- Monitor departmental expenditures to ensure compliance with the annual budget
- Back up accounts payable processing
- Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Be able to identify workplace deficiencies and recommend corrective policies and procedures - Be able to follow instructions. Proper organizational and time management skills. - Have hands on experience in financial controlling and budgeting. - Be reliable, honest, trustworthy and unbiased. - Have extensive knowledge of municipal and State laws and applicable procedures pertaining to the governing body. - Be well-versed with latest office equipment and procedures; Be proficient in handling computers. - Should be able to work independently and effectively without the instructions of any superior.-Be able to process and analyze large volumes of data effectively and efficiently-Be able to multitask and perform tasks within stated deadlines
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of Accounting, Finance or related field and at least three (3) years’ experience in financial role.
