Position Title: Senior Accountant Reports to: Comptroller
Dept/CC: Comptroller Salary Range: $75,000.00 - 80,000.00
Position Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Comptroller, prepares financial reports designed to track fixed assets, budgeted operating revenues and expenditures. Tracks grant programs, assists in preparing the monthly financial statements and bank reconciliations. Documents and serves as back-up to the accounts payable and payroll process. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Posts journal entries and assists with the preparation of monthly statements and annual balancing of general ledger accounts.
- Codes invoices and expenditures, setup new accounts, and closes the monthly books.
- Reconciles bank accounts, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries.
- In collaboration with the Comptroller, establishes internal controls and guidelines for accounting transactions, annual audits, and budget preparation.
- Verifies payment of invoices associated with accounts payable and ensures payments are charged to the appropriate accounts.
- Assists with the preparation of financial forecasts and annual budgets.
- Prepares periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or financial reporting standards.
- Responsible for sales tax reconciliation and calculations throughout the fiscal year.
- Audits accounts to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations; coordinates with outside auditors and provides needed information for the annual external audit.
- Codes, records and balances cash receipts as needed.
- Documents and tracks adherence to financial objectives and policies.
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
- Supervises the Comptroller’s Office in the absence of the Comptroller and/or the Assistant Comptroller.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings when needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Management or other related field.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of related experience required, preferably in a municipal setting.
