Lake County, IL (population 703,462) seeks an experienced public finance professional to serve as its Controller.  The Controller position is a key executive position reporting directly to the CFO.  The Lake County executive team is highly professional and collaborative with a passion and dedication to local government service. Lake County is located in northeastern Illinois, with Lake Michigan to the east, Wisconsin to the north and the City of Chicago to the south.  The county’s communities include picturesque rural communities, highly developed urban centers, suburban communities, and a significant amount of tourism.  Lake County is a large, complex organization consisting of more than 30 departments and divisions that provide services including law enforcement, water and sewerage treatment, public health, criminal justice, transportation, public works, land use planning, building inspections, and emergency management. The county has 2,679 employees, a $500+ million budget and is governed by a 21 member elected Board.

  • The Controller oversees the County’s financial accounting system and records and is responsible for producing the independently audited annual financial reports that disclose the fiscal condition of the County. 
  • The Controller leads a staff of 5 full time accounting professionals and collaborates with finance professionals throughout the County.  The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical knowledge as well as a team-oriented management and leadership style.   • The Controller position also assists with internal reviews of departmental operations and is actively involved in grant management and reporting.  The ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships throughout the County government is essential.

Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration or a related field as well as a CPA or CPFO designation, 5-7 years’ experience in governmental accounting and/or auditing, at least two years’ supervisory experience or any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. Starting salary range is $140,000 - $150,000 +/-depending on qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits package.
