Tweeting into Trouble? The Impact of Social Media on Your Job

Government employees and officials are Facebooking, Tweeting, Instagramming, and Snapchatting in increasing numbers, both at work and away from the workplace. Julie Tappendorf, an equity partner at the Ancel Glink law firm and the co-author of the book "Social Media & Local Governments: Navigating the New Public Square," will discuss how to identify and navigate the legal issues that arise in employee use of social media. She will discuss employer monitoring of employee social media use and restrictions on employee use of social media. Julie will also discuss the type of social media activities that can subject an employee to discipline and even termination through real-life examples of social media conduct both on and off the clock. Finally, the session will discuss the importance of creating and implementing a social media policy and employee training.

Julie Tappendorf is an equity partner with Ancel, Glink, Diamond, Bush, DiCianni & Krafthefer, P.C. in Chicago, practicing in the area of local government law. Julie has published a number of books and articles on government topics, including co-authoring the book Social Media and Local Governments: Navigating the New Public Square.
